My 850 Special is the same- have noticed it on others as well (don't see too many). Was told that in order to put the bigger 16" 130 rear tire for the cruiser style style (the standards used 18" 120) Yamaha spaced it over to the right to clear drive shaft rather than redesign the transmission case for more off set. Made sense, but still bugs me a little too. Once you notice, it really stands out.
